While alpine plants are typically selected for rock gardens, they do not thrive in the Atlanta area. Atlanta Botanical Garden Director of Horticulture Mildred Pinnell Fockele designed a Southern Rock Garden using plants well-adapted to the Southern climate that resemble the alpines they substitute. The garden is particularly brilliant in March.
