A trip to the Fuqua Orchid Center at the Atlanta Botanical Garden reveals a tropical paradise of beautiful, fragrant orchids. The Fuqua Orchid Center is home to the largest collection of species orchids in the United States. The Garden's annual orchid exhibition, Orchid Daze, highlights the rare orchid collection. In addition to the permanent tropical orchid collection, each year Orchid Daze features other diverse species such as vibrantly colored phalaenopsis, dendrobiums, cattleyas and other orchids complemented by tropical foliage plants.
Orchid Daze is themed differently each year. Most recently, Orchid Daze: Liquid Landscapes made a splash in the spring of 2011, featuring thousands of orchids in full bloom complemented by unique water features. Water walls formed the backdrop for towering expanses of potted orchids with blooms in warm hues of red, orange and yellow. Planters spilling with pink, purple and lime green orchids rose from a reflecting pool. Curtains of red, white and yellow potted orchids were suspended behind a shroud of trickling water beads.
Other Orchid Daze exhibits have included, Towers of Flowers, Gorgeous Meets Glass, Gargoyles and Grace, and Carnivàle. In 2007, the Garden collaborated with Fräbel Studio. Orchid Daze with Fräbel integrated the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s world-renowned orchid collection with the spectacularly detailed sculptures of internationally acclaimed artist and Atlanta resident Hans Godo Fräbel. Fräbel was inspired by the Garden's collections and impressed by its history of bringing innovative exhibitions to the city. The Garden’s state-of-the-art conservatories, which house the largest public collection of orchids in the U.S., were the perfect complement for the organic and often playful glass and sculptures.
