Join Dr. Alison Foster at the Atlanta Botanical Garden for a free Alston Lecture and learn about the medicinal plant collection at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden.

The University of Oxford Botanic Garden, founded in 1621, is the oldest botanic garden in the UK. Started as a physic garden, it was used to grow plants for university medical students. Since then, many hundreds of species of medicinal plants have been grown there, a tradition that continues today.

The talk will explore the development of a new medicinal plant collection at the university as well as the involvement of some plants grown there in the discovery and development of modern drugs. A Senior Curator at the university, Foster worked for more than a decade in the pharmaceutical industry as a medicinal chemist and subsequently process chemist before moving into horticulture. Her particular interest is medicinal plants.

Dr. Alison Foster comes to Atlanta as the 2012 Pierce Visiting Scholar of The Pierce Institute for Leadership and Community Engagement at Oxford College of Emory University.

The Philip and Elkin Alston Lecture series is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Loridans Foundation. Admission to the lecture is free, and no reservations are required.

Looking for something a little out of the ordinary to grow in next year’s garden? This presentation will introduce a variety of edibles many probably never thought about growing including wasabi, hops, truffles and yard-long beans. Learn a little bit about how to grow them and a lot about where to find plants, seeds, and more information for harvesting unique garden goodies next year.

Dr. Jeanine Davis is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Horticultural Science at North Carolina State University.  For more than 20 years her program has focused on helping farmers improve the sustainability and profitability of their farms. Medicinal herbs are her specialty, and she has conducted many studies on developing commercially viable production systems for native herbs such as goldenseal, black cohosh, bloodroot and ramps. Some of her current projects include establishing an organic research unit at one of the university‚Äôs mountain research stations, working with local farmers to grow hops and truffles, and participating in a project to develop an East Coast broccoli industry. She is also the co-author of ‚ÄúGrowing and Marketing Ginseng, Goldenseal and Other Woodland Medicinals.‚Äù

Davis will also present a full-day seminar on Saturday, November 6, Grow Your Own Pharmacy.
